Cheung Chau Sourdough |
Wakinbakin.life

In 2018, I began cultivating sourdough bread using fruit yeast on Cheung Chau. Cheung Chau Sourdough is not an ordinary bakery, but a record of my shared life with yeast and the island's neighbors. Wakinbakin.life is my self-built in-house website, integrating the latest update engines and cutting-edge technology. It not only records bread making, community stories, and visual creations, but also provides real-time fresh bake information, Sourclass workshop schedules, and an online ordering system, allowing the aroma of Cheung Chau yeast to cross the sea and reach the city. In Sourclass, I invite neighbors and friends to knead dough together, transforming fermentation time into collective meditation—from wheat, salt, and water to lively yeast, reconnecting the complete journey of food from land to table. This sourdough journey has led me into deep philosophical thinking about "microbes," understanding how microorganisms interact with the human body and island climate, becoming an ongoing "life research."

Laure Raibaut
NissaBella.Art

Laure Raibaut is a curator and art historian traveling between Asia and Europe, having studied deeply at Sorbonne University in Paris, SOAS in London, and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, and long-term engaged in exhibition curation and art education in Hong Kong. We met on Cheung Chau through the art circle and bread; she brought me the core value—understanding the deep connections between art and culture. We have had multiple substantial collaborations, including exhibition design, photography documentation, and visual projects, from venue layout to complete production of promotional images. Her inspiration made me think: How to transform Cheung Chau's daily life into works that can dialogue with the world? This perspective changed my creative approach; bread images are no longer just product photos, but carriers of cultural narratives, where every crack and every hue carries the island's stories and handmade warmth.

Louis To Wun

Louis To (杜煥) is a Hong Kong contemporary artist using bamboo and paper as mediums; we first met at Sense99—that famous underground art music stage. His works transcend time and space, filled with imaginative bamboo structures and paper textures, reinterpreting traditional sugar-pulling crafts into images of deities, geometry, and cosmic creatures. Bamboo scaffolds, paper crafts, and Cheung Chau's traditional craftsmanship felt extremely intimate to me, as if temple fair structures walked into contemporary art spaces. Later, we met multiple times on the island and in the city, discussing how to build "temporary universes" with hands and natural materials. This structure- and space-oriented creation profoundly influenced how I view photography and bread—the fermenting dough and oven steam become metaphors for "architecture" in limited spaces, where time and materials together create life structures.

Christophe Dénoux
ChristopheDenoux.com

Christophe Dénoux is an artist/designer traveling between France and Asia, with creations spanning planes, objects, and spaces, focusing on the poetic relationships between shapes, lines, and everyday objects. Introduced by Cheung Chau friends, we started from the simplest island conversations—sea breezes, light, and the textures of old building walls as shared observation entry points. He taught me the wisdom of European old craftsmen: about layers of color, transparency of glass, volume of sculpture, and the emotional expression of light and hope. As an artist truly starting from inspirational perspectives, Christophe taught me to gaze at the island more quietly: color gradients, material contrasts, and traces of time left on walls. These insights permeate Moody Visual Studio's photography design; handmade work and time itself are the deepest "canvases."
